To play homage to the classic mid-century American musical, the costume design concept was presentational with bright exaggerated colors and patterns. The contrast between the conservative Save-a-Soul Mission uniforms and the playful streetwear highlighted the dynamic struggle of perceived good and evil on the streets of New York in the early 1950's.
The Hot Box dance numbers were influenced by nightclub dancers and pin-up girls, while the Havana Club dancers showed a stylized variation on the popular "exotic" club atmosphere of the era.
