Julius Caesar

Julius Caesar

Director: Ed Vaughn
Scenic Designer: Dan Gray
Lighting Designer: Elliot France

For this project, Director Ed Vaughn wanted to explore the fact that this 2,000 year old story of betrayal, politics, and power was still relevant today and would probably be relevant another 2,000 years into the future.  From there, we saw this as a possible divergent future where men and women had separated into two factions. Caesar and his men were in power, but Brutus and HER conspirators were aiming to usurp power.  I was able to explore gender differences and choose to highlight the Men as a militaristic, cold and hard.  By contrast, the Women were driven by primal, near animalistic tribal sisterhood.  Dan Grey's epic set was anchored in the world of Men - a tangible and unmoving presence, and Elliot France's lighting - etherial and ever-changing, was vital in creating a complete world where both of these factions could coexist harmoniously while still maintaining their unique visual identities.
